Annie Rossi in a David Bowie Space Oddity

Hey everybody! Annie Rossi here, owner of AddictedChic.com.
On January 10, 2016, this world lost our most beloved David Bowie. “Planet Earth is blue.” – Space Oddity.
I’m not a Bowie expert, I don’t know every single album or every single song, but I’m a huge fan of this amazing artist.
The Bowie songs that I do know mean SO much to me, they found their way deep into my heart, connected to profound moments and eras in my life.

I must admit, I am a music fanatic. I feel like music, certain songs, give me life, I feel such an energy from them, even direction and inspiration. I could be struggling with a decision, hear a song and suddenly I know exactly what to do. Someone is definitely speaking to me through song.

In 2005, when I first began to dream of opening Addicted Jeans Store, on the 2nd and 3rd floors of 43 Main Street, Clinton, NJ, expanding up two levels from my Mom’s boutique “Added Touches by Mary” which she opened in 1980, Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven was most definitely playing a strong inspirational role. I had begun working with my Mom in 1992, really just as something casual and part-time. Well, it turned out that my Mom and I worked very well together, and a natural talent for fashion styling, visuals and customer service seemed to blossom in me. Funny, because I hated clothes growing up, being a real tomboy, and that I had graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a double major in International Relations (a combination of Political Science, Economics and History) and French. My aspirations were either to be a translator at the UN or go on to law school.
During the time from 1992 to 2004, my fashion work at my Mom’s boutique became also a daytime escape from a very oppressive marriage. It’s a difficult period of time in my life for me to talk about, but I know that when I find the courage to do so, it’s another step on the path toward my healing. Let’s begin by saying this, my comings and goings to and from work were strictly controlled and timed. The life I lived at home during that time is quite a story, one I feel I must soon tell. Truly the lyrics from Hotel California ring true, “some dance to remember, some dance to forget.” The whole marriage experience for me was truly a “Space Oddity.” My serious dedication to my vow to God at the alter” for better or for worse” was what kept me there, until the unexpected day came when God said it was time to go. But that’s a whole other story as well, which we will reunite for another time.
After I asked for divorce in November of 2004, and done by April 2005, the world opened up to me, and I felt like I was let out of prison. Freedom seemed a trippy thing. (Didn’t mean to get into all this background on me, but I guess if we’re going to be “blog friends,” we have to get to know each other! 🙂 )
Finally able to spread my wings and fly, a vision of a super cool upstairs boutique with brick walls and a winding staircase hit me one morning with such a lightening bolt I remember barely being able to control my excitement. Annie_Rossi_David_Bowie_Fashion2By the end of 2005, the dream came true. My Mom and I became business partners, we bought the building and converted the upstairs apartment into Addicted Jeans Store. We saw it as an outreach capturing the contemporary trendy shopper, now enabling us to offer our fabulous clientele a fashion selection beyond career wear, wedding attire and sophisticated casual.

The timing turned out to be perfect as our opening synchronized with the launch and overtaking of premium denim as the new must-have in fashion. Offering great premium denim brands like Seven for All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, Joe’s Jeans and bohemian-inspired Free People, Addicted Jeans Store enabled us to expand to further become the place to shop for women “who get it” from NYC to Allentown, PA. Our brick walls and winding staircases evoked the same response from ecstatic shoppers, “This place makes me feel like I’m in Soho!”
We shortened “Added Touches By Mary” to “Mary’s” and have now incorporated not only our Addicted Jeans Store but also our brand new babies, Addicted Chic at the Shoppes at Flemington, and addictedchic.com all under “Added Touches By Mary, LLC,” in honor of my entrepreneurial & amazing Mom, Mary Kayler’s, first boutique.

Addicted Jeans Store has been known for our great selection of pop-culture and rock star vintage tees since it’s inception. This Bowie one I’m wearing in these photos from July 2011, is an all-time favorite of mine. These photos were taken on the stairway from the 2nd to the 3rd floor at 43 Main Street, Clinton, NJ.
Until next time, a fond adieu!  -Annie
